ad to say I’m pretty much done with this board, it could have been a really interesting place to have rational and intelligent discussions but I feel that by posting, I’m simply feeding the two trolls here. When I look at the topics I just see a long list of rage inducing click bait headlines.

Reading some of the posts here on this latest horror taking place in the Middle East has been the last straw for me.

No one has expressed my position on this as well as Mathew Cooke:

“Please excuse my strong words. What I am seeing online in so many comments and posts is so sad, disturbing, and counter productive.

What Israel experienced is similar to 9-11. A horrific terror attack. The response has also been similar - a "remedy" that exponentially expands the terror and violence.

Two million Israelis voted for Netanyahu. Another two million opposed. To support or justify terrorism against Israeli civilians and their children for the violence of Israeli apartheid makes you no better than those you oppose.

Israel's liberal newspapers and human rights organizations are calling out Israeli apartheid in stronger terms than the corporate-financed western media. There are literally millions of allies of Palestinians in Israel who want peace.

The reverse is also true. Leading Palestinian rights groups are calling the massacres committed by Hamas against Israeli civilians horrific war crimes. Which they obviously are.

To seek revenge against Hamas terrorism on the families and children of Gaza already suffering from 75 years of apartheid is equally evil.

The bombing and war crimes Netanyahu is now inflicting on civilians in apartheid zones, which can easily be called concentration camps, is an attempted genocide.

Israeli airstrikes just killed at least 260 children. Doctors Without Borders in Gaza said 100% of patients treated on Wednesday were kids. Electricity, water and aid has been cut off.

If the terror Hamas inflicted is your excuse for war crimes, you are the same as Hamas. There is no difference.

Desmond Tutu (look him up if you don't know who he is) made it clear that Palestine was living under conditions worse than apartheid.
.
It is up to the world and the USA particularly, to put peaceful pressure on ending apartheid.
The US government is currently co-financing that apartheid and co-financing what looks like is about to be ethnic cleansing of 2 million people in Gaza.

Our elected representatives (and therefore we as civilians and citizens) have enormous power to do something.

This is not anti-Semitism nor a religious issue. Judaism is not defined by right-wing Israeli Zionism anymore than Christianity is defined by Trump-evangelicals, or the crusades.
There are millions of Jewish people, who are allies of Palestine, calling for an end to Israeli apartheid all over the world.

There have been many brilliant Jewish voices in the USA calling for it to end for decades. Norman Finkelstein. Tim Wise. Noam Chomsky. Bernie Sanders. Michael Brooks.... and on and on...
Neither are Hamas attacks on civilians "extremist" Islam. That's like saying they are "extremely" devoted to surrendering (to the Highest Good). It's ridiculous.

Extremist evil. That is what we are witnessing - all over. I know it is hard but this is not a time for nationalism that dehumanizes anyone. This is a time for love and pride in all humanity. This is a time to see how borders are meaningless when it comes to families and children.

This is a time for the loudest calls for peace. For the protection of all civilians and children. For an end to apartheid and an end to ethno-nationalism and religious cultural supremacy. Violence only begets more violence. Terror only creates more terror. Poverty creates more poverty.
We are one people. One world. We can have peace. And equal human rights.

Or we will have nothing."

    isle,

Extremist evil. That is what we are witnessing - all over. I know it is hard but this is not a time for nationalism that dehumanizes anyone. This is a time for love and pride in all humanity. This is a time to see how borders are meaningless when it comes to families and children.

I want to agree with that sentiment. But, it strikes me as being hyper-simplistic.

Can you say that, in the face of Nazi evil, the world's response should have been "love and pride in all humanity?" When white robed KKK thugs were lynching black men and raping black women, with impunity, across the south, should the US government embraced love and pride?

    I can't go there.

Evil, IMO, can't be allowed to operate unchecked. My father quit high school to fight in WW II and was injured fighting evil. I honor him for that. Wouldn't you?

Certainly, the world must proceed with wisdom and care in this moment. But, I think that the answer you're proposing is Kumbaya. I can't go there.

    *****

BTW, I know that SS posters who normally agree with you ain't trolls. Which of the three who regularly take you to task are the "two trolls?": pb. OD or Indy!?

I empathize with your feelings on this. In a perfect world, this would not happen, nor would it be an issue. And the world is made of humans. Imperfect, and sometimes evil.

Nothing done on either side has shocked me. I've tried to give an analyst's view of things. I learned Hamas has evolved. For the worse. They have shown there is zero negotiation with them. Their utter hatred of everyone that isn't "them" is apparent. They are on a suicide mission and know it. They are willing to do that to claim their form of heaven.

Agreed. I took one post to voice my complete disdain of pure and true evil. I think I'm allowed that. Having witnessed the horrible ISIL acts of murdering children slowly in front of their parents. The beheading of innocent people, the middle eastern way. It's a long process, not quick like you would imagine.

I have learned that there are good and great people. That's why I argued incessantly about bringing home more of the known Afghans. And curt argued against.

And there is also evil. I agree, if this were a people that I were with, it would still be evil. And I would demand equal justice. Evil doesn't pick a religion or political view. If they were dogs, we would put them down immediately.

You are trying to reason with a rock. Not a human being. Someone that contains so much hatred they don't have the ability to conceptualize any other view. Their end goal is to leave only their style of Islam in the world. And if the world all dies (literally), that's okay with them.

"This is not anti-Semitism nor a religious issue. Judaism is not defined by right-wing Israeli Zionism anymore than Christianity is defined by Trump-evangelicals, or the crusades."

Isle, I completely agree with your whole post also. It's sad how so many people in this country can't be open minded enough to look at the big picture and comprehend how there are innocent victims on both sides. Not just the side that they wholly support. These people have no basic human empathy. If it wasn't for the fact that such people naturally gravitate to the Republican party, their mass of inhumanity in our population probably wouldn't be noticed as strongly as it is.

I know we don't always converse all that much. Mostly I think because we seem to see things so much the same way. But I have always greatly valued your participation in here and look forward to your contributions.

Donna and I also have to take breaks from this place from time to time, so we totally understand what you are saying. The trolls can certainly be rather exhausting. Concerted, intentional, and organized stupidity is a tremendously frustrating thing to combat since there is little common ground to work from. I think that we should get some sort of medal for being able to do it to the degree and for as long as we have. I hope you don't stay away long if you do go and look forward to your return.

"Can you say that, in the face of Nazi evil, the world's response should have been "love and pride in all humanity?" -Hate

But Bill, the problem with your comparison of how the country of Israel is treating the Palestinians in the Occupied Territories to how the Nazis treated Jews during WW2 is that the people of the world at the time had really no idea about how the Nazis were actually treating the Jews in their concentration camps to be able to respond to it. Had they known, there likely would have been much more protest from the rest of the world to stop the genocide and have peace.

People of the world have been all too aware of how Israel has treated their Palestinian prisoners in giant concentration camps for many many decades. And the people of the world, excluding the U.S. of course, have been protesting Israel's treatment of the Palestinians in the Occupied Territories and calling for peace for pretty much as long as Israel has existed.

But Bill, I really must commend you though for this bold attempt at making an equitable comparison. Although it didn't really work, since you are incapable of doing it, it was possibly your best and closest attempt to construct one to date. Congratulations! And good on you for not giving up!

po, that's a gross misrepresentation of the place of Israel in this conflict.

Still, the point in our SS dialog is that it's only OD and pb who've expressed compassion for everyone involved and sought to understand all sides.

My comment noted that evil is active.

I DID NOT SUGGEST THAT EITHER IS INNOCENT. I DIDN'T TAKE A SIDE. I HAVEN'T. I WON'T. I DIDN'T CONDEMN EITHER SIDE... ONLY THE EVIL ITSELF.

YOU NEED TO HAVE A HEART AND DO THE SAME.

    Your hunny came out swinging,...

...when the bodies of Israeli grammies and babies were strewn across the ground, when innocent Israelis were being arranged as human shields, denouncing Israel for cutting the water faucet...

    ...ignoring the atrocities of Hamas.

So, whoa NellieBelle. OD and pb aren't the ones guilty of ignoring half of the evil.

OD and pb, from the beginning, denounced the evil. All of it.

Our enemy is the evil. Not the Palestinians. Nor Israel.

    Slow genocide, od.

You need to look at the numbers you cite. Yes, that one number is correct. What you don't say is the population there is actually growing. What the other interesting thing is that for "early" pregnancies (16-18 y/o) is almost nil. That is pretty impressive for a penal camp, considering most of the pregnancies in Haiti (for instance) are mostly between 14-18. Because of the systematic rapes and organizational crime.

Below is a picture of one of your camps.

Some of us might like to think that, but it’s not true. We had an idea. Some were obstinately oblivious to the suffering of Jews in Germany, but they could have known.

Consider the movies that explored the evils committed by Nazis: “the mortal storm“ which starred, Jimmy Stewart, “confessions of a Nazi spy“ which starred Edward G Robinson. “Hitler: Beast of Berlin” and even Charles Chaplin’s “The Great Dictator”. Those films were made in 1939 in 1940 before Pearl Harbor. You can read about these film titles on the website IMDb.com.

Besides the movies, newspapers in America reported on the worst of Nazi excesses, for example, Kristallnacht in 1938. The books on which the above movies were based came out earlier, of course. It’s certainly arguable that Nazis were doing worse things than we could imagine.

How did the allies respond? We hammered Germany not just a Nazis. We flattened Dresden. We were remorseless in our bombing of Germany. Maybe not all Americans knew what was happening to Jews, but in Germany, they knew.

  21. by HatetheSwamp on October 13, 2023 9:27 am

I want to think that but, probably, it's muted, antisemitism.

I was disputing Ponderer’s contention that the world had “no idea” what the Nazis were doing to Jews during and prior to World War II.

Right, Curt. Could po really have believed that. It's imbibilic.

  27. by Donna on October 14, 2023 8:37 am

Ponderer was specific about what was happening at the concentration camps. She's correct that Americans had no idea that they were extermination camps.

At the risk of being called a Nazi sympathizer, I deplore what the US did to Dresden.

  28. by Curt_Anderson on October 14, 2023 8:55 am
Donna, Google the topic. For example, this is from time magazine

Truth Behind the Myth of American Ignorance on the Holocaust

'It's Not That the Story Was Buried.' What Americans in the 1930s Really Knew About What Was Happening in Germany

[Public] opinion polls demonstrating that while half of U.S. respondents in 1943 thought the fact that 2 million Jewish Europeans had been murdered was just a rumor, by 1944 about three-quarters believed concentration camps were really part of the Nazi plan — and yet they still couldn’t fathom the number of victims involved. (A Gallup poll that year shows that most people who dared to guess thought the number killed would be in the hundreds of thousands, or less.)
    time.com

  29. by Donna on October 14, 2023 9:06 am

Right. Americans didn't know about the extermination camps until 1944. That was only a year before the end of WW2. That's essentially what Sheri's saying.

  30. by oldedude on October 14, 2023 9:15 am
I think it was just to horrible to think it could really happen. If people don't have a reality of something, it takes a lot to accept it at all. If it's not in their reality there's no reference point for the brain.

The BBC published a report, “700,000 Jews killed in Poland,” on June 2, 1942. The information was also broadcast on the radio.

On December 17, 1942, the Allies issued a proclamation condemning the extermination of the Jewish people in Europe and declared that they would punish the perpetrators.

    Bang on, Curt.

As you know, I'm a student of history. One of my "hobbies" in studying history is the history of the US and Great Britain from 1930ish through the early post war era both places. FOYLE'S WAR.

po, and Donna, have clamped on to an easy antisemite myth about the Nazis and the holocaust and the US.

The truth was widely suspected in America. Not all believed. Some were not upset. Like many today were either slow to care about the Hamas atrocities or even applaud them.

  33. by Donna on October 14, 2023 10:11 am

Well you can take that up with Sheri then, Curt. From my personal experience, most people are uneducated or miseducated about a variety of topics except for maybe pop culture, which has probably been true for time immemorial. There are endless truths that are known, but that most people don't have a clue about.

  34. by HatetheSwamp on October 14, 2023 12:06 pm

Our whole country was rationing. From before we entered the war. Roosevelt attempted to fight the war with our factories. Hollywood was creating propaganda to be viewed every time Americans attended a flick.

You couldn't not have known all about the war. The World War was pop culture.

  35. by Ponderer on October 15, 2023 8:18 am

Curt, I would simply direct you to the comparable fact of how so few Americans today even have any idea of how bad it is in Gaza. And that's with an internet. In fact, some Americans are so blitheringly pig-ignorant of the subject that they are now saying, "Why do they stay? Why don't they go home?".

There was no internet back in WW2. People got their news from radio and news papers. Movies??? They should have known what was going on in the Nazi concentration camps because of a couple movies??? The entire country should have been aware of something going on on the other side of the planet because of a couple movies???

This country even sent a ship full of escaped Jewish refugees back to Germany to be killed! And they were! We sure didn't want them here. Sounds like what was really being done to them didn't bother us in the least. Because PEOPLE DIDN'T KNOW.

  36. by oldedude on October 15, 2023 8:48 am
jjpo- The first paragraph was nothing but bullshit.

The rest of it I thought was pretty spot on. ALL the movies at the time (Allied and Axis) were "approved" by the governments and were basically propaganda.

There "may" have been a "feeling" there was "something" going on with the Jewish Problem (as the NAZIs put it). But when the camps were found, we first thought the Russians were lying to us, and just giving their atrocities a cover. If there was a thought they were "arresting" the Jews, no one had a clue the network was so horrible. I think there were also rumblings about the other groups, but there was no solid evidence. They just "disappeared." That was the end of it.

Long story short. I agree with your assessment.

  37. by Curt_Anderson on October 15, 2023 9:03 am
    Ponderer,
You will never catch me saying that ignorance is not a major problem, now or during World War II. As for the Internet, it is both a provider of information and a reinforcer of misinformation and ignorance.

You refer to the ship St. Louis, which carried Jewish refugees. That episode is a stain on Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s and America’s reputation. It was not so much that America didn’t know, as FDR realized America was populated with anti-immigrationists and antisemites. It’s not that different today.

The link below is about the ship’s captain Gustaf Schroeder who heroically saved the Jewish passengers, and brought to ship back to Germany empty.

As Israel’s furious retaliation for last weekend’s Hamas attack devastates large swathes of the Gaza strip, killing hundreds and maiming thousand s of Palestinians, it is not unreasonable to wonder why the 2.3 million civilians living in the tiny enclave don’t flee to safer ground.

    C'mon, po. Gimme a break.

Furious retaliation? Israel's still lining up tanks and troops on the border. (See link) cuz you ain't seen nuthin yet.

But, honestly, you're prissy if you think this is, as you'd say, EFFINfurious. Keehee haha, ha.

I'm curious. What do you think would be an appropriate Israeli response to, as you minimize it, "last weekend’s Hamas attack."

This is an account of German news agencies (mostly dailies) that are voicing their concerns.

Alarming news from Germany. "It must end"

The conflict in the Middle East remains in the headlines in Germany. The media discusses various aspects of Hamas' assault on Israel, but also address the topic of anti-Semitism in German schools.

The "Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung" writes very harshly. "Even in this difficult time for the people they rule, the Islamist gang of murderers shows why they need to be crushed. It did not warn Israel last Saturday, quite the contrary, it treacherously attacked and murdered or kidnapped anyone who fell into its hands" - we read.

"Now Hamas is calling on the residents of the Gaza Strip to stay in their homes; there are reports that it is trying to stop refugees. The comparison with the executioners of so-called "Islamic State", which has appeared in the past few days, is not incorrect. Anyone who shamelessly uses their own people as a shield cannot be considered a legitimate representative of the Palestinian cause" - it was added.

"Augsburger Allgemeine" writes in a similar tone. "The German government, currently in crisis, is finding the right way to deal with Israel, both in terms of content and tone. Germany's obligation to the Israeli nation arises from the Holocaust, the mass murder of Jews, organized and carried out by the Germans. This commitment to Israel, which ultimately is 'the only safe space for Jewish life,' as SPD General Secretary Kevin Kühnert recently said.

Of course, the conflict in the Middle East has not been black and white for decades. But now it is clear who is the perpetrator and who is the victim. Therefore, lectures on how Israel should wage this war are not up for discussion. Israel has the right to defend itself from Hamas's attack. Period."

"Reutlinger General-Anzeiger" highlights: "Antisemitism has many faces; there is right-wing, left-wing, and Muslim antisemitism. The German state has long refrained from taking decisive action against the latter. This needs to end. Many Arab countries treat Israel as their biggest enemy, and hatred towards Jews is often considered good tone by them. But what is accepted there, is not tolerated here. The German state has to clearly communicate this to immigrants and, if necessary, penalize for violations. Because tolerance for intolerance is a sign of weakness".

"Neue Osnabruecker Zeitung" analyzes: "When Jews are afraid to wear kippahs in public places, when synagogues, Jewish schools, and other institutions must be guarded by the police, and when Jewish restaurants report fewer customers and a tense atmosphere, this is unbearable. It is equally unbearable and intolerable when teachers and the Central Council of Jews in Germany report on open hatred towards Jews in schools. But what can be done? A ban imposed on terrorist organizations such as Hamas is, of course, right, even for the sake of symbolism. A consistent stance against demonstrators who celebrate murders and terror is also correct. It is obvious that schools need more staff, from teachers to security guards, to not succumb to anti-Semites".

According to "Lausitzer Rundschau" from Cottbus: "Taking into account the open joy of some Muslims on German streets due to Hamas' terror in Israel, Germany has to acknowledge that their country has ignored this problem for too long. And it has long since reached schools, children, and youth who grew up in an atmosphere of hatred towards Jews. Teachers often feel powerless. And if they intervene, they must expect violence from their students, as an event in Berlin this week has shown. This must come to an end. However, it would be a mistake to address the necessary debate on this topic only to teachers. Explanation and persuasion need to start much earlier: with parents, in families, in mosques. Apart from a few brave associations, few dare to open this Pandora's box. And that is why the issue of anti-Semitism will probably accompany Germany for a long time. In spite of all the cruelties of Hamas".

Good times, gang. Remember po comparing Israel in 023 with Nazi Germany?

But Bill, the problem with your comparison of how the country of Israel is treating the Palestinians in the Occupied Territories to how the Nazis treated Jews during WW2 is that the people of the world at the time had really no idea about how the Nazis were actually treating the Jews in their concentration camps to be able to respond to it.

    Good, good times.

    po, you must repent.

I'm going to stick by my statement that the world didn't really know about how far Himmler would take "the Jewish problem." I also believe the "Hamas problem" in Israel is well documented and the Palestinians (or better said the PLO, Hamas, and Iran) are making hay on disinformation.

In the past 10 days, a lot has happened. The attack by Hamas (and it's handlers) are more than willing to "sport murder" the Jews because they believe the world will support them. Iran is arming itself against the US, firing missiles against US embassy personnel in Iraq. I expect to see much more in that regard.

These countries are not lone actors. The FBI has put out a warning for "lone wolf" attacks, which may happen. I see a larger problem of having cells of the beliebers attacking jews in their houses of worship, on the streets, etc. If they are sanctioned by these puppeteers, they're getting paid for their martyrdom. I'm going to say it here, there are enough sympathizers in the US and globally to assist them, this is going to be a huge problem. So big that the murder of an entire Temple of Jews won't even make national news.

The question is: will it be a "summer of love" event? or a "winter wonderland event?" Again, I think they'll get the others from the land of misfit toys. Antifada, BLM, and others that support "their plight." And already the NAZIs are chiming in support of beheading children. Internationally, that can become quite a group.

The "twelvers" won't stop at Jews though. That is the real problem. If you're not a Muslim, a Shi'ite, and a "Twelver" Shi'ite Muslim, you're a target. Why? Because that's what they believe in. So it's not like parents speaking against what the school board wants, it's being murdered by the edge of the sword for who you are. They believe they are doing the will of al Quaran, and therefore the will of God.
